Every year millions of people are forced to flee their homelands because of war, civil unrest or in fear of persecution. There is an estimated 42.5 million people displaced by persecution and conflict in the world. This breaks down to 15.2 million refugees, 26.4 million internally displaced persons and 895,000 asylum seekers (Salvation Army, Australia).
Asylum seekers are people who are seeking refugee status in a country but whose claim to refugee status has not yet been determined. Around the world asylum seekers and refugees are living in refugee camps and immigration centers. It is estimated that half of these displaced people are children.
Your task is to design a refugee camp or immigration center that meets the needs of the refugees and ensures that their human rights are upheld.
This task will take you 2 to 3 hours.
1. Take some time learn about children who have been forced to flee their homes. This would be an incredibly tough situation. Think about how you would fee in the same situation. Create a list of the challenges refugees and asylum seekers face when they are seeking refuge.

2. Children have rights just like adults and these are protected under The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). The refugee camp or immigration center that you will design needs to make sure that all of these rights are upheld. Familiarise yourself with the UNCRC.
3. Imagine you are now the Governments chief planner and you have been asked to plan a new refugee camp or immigration center to be the home for families seeking asylum in Australia. You must stick to the design brief.
Design Brief:
- Must be able to accommodate up to 100 families
- Must ensure that the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child are upheld.
- Must include accommodation, a commercial kitchen, medical centre and some kind of entertainment.
- Must not cost the Government too much money. (You will need to use your judgement here....what is reasonable?)
4. Write an explanation or a speech to discuss why you included particular features in your design, how your design would help refugees and asylum seekers cope with the challenges they face moving to a new country and in what ways have you ensured that the UNCRC are upheld. Share your work with your teacher and class.
